Four great reasons to visit Turkey

Turkey is a great holiday destination and is as suitable for a trip with the family as with a group of friends. As well as fantastic beaches, there is an amazing landscape to discover inland and some beautiful cities to explore.

Here are just a few suggestions of some great places to see while you’re there:

Beautiful Bodrum

Bodrum holidays are usually a combination of cultural and historical sightseeing round iconic places such as St Peter’s Castle, the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaelogy and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, as well as spending time on the beautiful beaches in the area. No trip to Bodrum would be complete without spending some time on the sparkling blue water around Bodrum on a gulet cruise.

Cappadocia

For a trip to an almost lunar landscape, make time to visit Cappadocia, a strange and eerie landscape where the rock formations look like fairy chimneys. These formations were created by volcanic activity millions of years ago and amongst them there are many underground churches and cities carved into the rock. The best way to visit Cappadocia is by hot air balloon, to see the landscape at its best.

Cotton Castle

Another fascinating site in Turkey is the world heritage site known as Cotton Castle or Pammukale in Denizli province. This landscape was formed by hot water flowing through leaving deposits of calcium bicarbonate behind it, which gradually created the ridges and steps we see here today. The hot water still flows here and is said to have healing properties.

The wooden horse

If you love history, then you’ll really enjoy a trip to one of the world’s most famous cities – Troy. This four thousand year old city is in the Canakkale province and is where the Trojan War took place. You can see a replica of the Trojan horse here while you take in the splendour of this world heritage site.

Of course, this is just a taster of what Turkey has to offer its holiday makers. You can get absorbed in the culture of this beautiful country or just take it easy on the beautiful beaches you’ll find here; the choice is yours.

A couple of these suggestions are new to me and they sound great! I think a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia sounds like the top pick for me… though Troy is always tempting 😀
