AirAsia touches down in Clark Pampanga - Now Everyone Can Fly
Clark - Airasia's inaugural service to Clark (Pampanga Philippines) from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu has gotten off to a resounding start yesterday. The airline made its first ever landing on Philippine soil when flight AK 32 from Kuala Lumpur touched down at Diosdado Macapagal International Airport at approximately 10:45 am last April 5,2005. The appearance of Airasia at Diosdado Macapagal Airport will go down in history as the first ever low fare airline in Asia to land in the former Asia's largest U.S Military base.
A welcome reception was held at the airport to mark the historical occation. Officials who were present to welcome the 116 passengers on board flight AK 32 were General Danilo Augusto Francia of Clark International Airport Corporation, President Antonio R. Ng of Clark Development Corporation, DOT Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab and Tony Fernandez, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia Berhad.
Meanwhile, another AirAsia flight AK 502 from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah Malaysia have landed yesterday at approximately 4:05 in the afternoon with around 102 passengers on board in this inaugural flight.
AirAsia is no stranger to charting milestones throughout its 3 year operation. Since its take -over in 2001, AirAsia has revolutionised air travel in the region to become a leading low fare airline in South East Asia. In 2004, AirAsia formed successful joint ventures in Thailand and Indonesia where AirAsia holds 49% stake in both companies. Thai AirAsia, a joint venture with Shin Corporation, Thailand’s largest telecommunication conglomerate, took to the skies in Feb 2004 while PT AWAIR was re-launched as an Indonesian based low fare airline on Dec 8th 2004. To date, the AirAsia Group has carried over 9 million passengers.
The Group operates over 100 domestic and international daily flights with a fleet of Boeing 737-300s from its hubs in KL International Airport and Senai International Airport (Johor Bahru) in Malaysia, Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok, Thailand, and at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia. To date, the Group commands a fleet of 28 Boeing 737-300s based at the various hubs.
AirAsia was named Asia Pacific Low Cost Airline of the Year 2004 by Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) AirAsia. The airline also clinched the prestigious Euromoney award for Asia Best Managed Company in the Airlines & Aviation Sector and Air Transport World’s Market Leadership Award at the recent 2005 Airline Achievement Awards.
