In another historic first for the country, the Philippines won two (2) Gold Awards for its pavilion at the recently concluded Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea – an unprecedented achievement in the history of the Expo awards – besting ten other country participants in the Small Pavilion Category (Category C). This marks the first time that the Philippines won the Gold Award in an international expo, and also the first time in the entire history of the international expo that a country has won two Gold Awards.

Adjudged by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the Philippine pavilion was awarded Gold Award winners for Creative Display and Theme Development criteria from 11 participating countries, besting the likes of Vietnam, Brunei, Mexico, Tunisia, Egypt, and Lithuania. Lithuania and Mexico brought home the silver and bronze, respectively, for the Creative Display criteria, while Tunisia and Vietnam brought home the silver and bronze, respectively, for the Theme Development criteria. The Department of Tourism’s (DOT) “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” campaign was able to reach a wide audience with little cost to the government, a senior tourism official said.

Domingo Ramon Enerio III, DOT assistant secretary for tourism planning and officer-in-charge of the Tourism Promotions Board, said the campaign is still in its early days but the catchphrase has spread “like wildfire.”

”It has become a people’s campaign,” he said.

Enerio said the simple truth about the Filipino people is the secret to its success, saying the campaign’s message is easy to understand, speaks the truth about the Filipino culture and makes the locals proud.

Department of Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez led the inauguration of the one-kilometer submarine water pipeline along the Caticlan-Boracay channel that will augment the existing 13-year old pipeline supplying water to Boracay from mainland Malay town. The P126-M submarine pipe, constructed by Boracay Island Water Company (BIWC), a subsidiary of Manila Water Company, the East Zone concessionaire of Metro Manila, is intended to further improve the island’s water supply.

Jimenez, Jr. leaves for Germany this week to lead a 41-man delegation from the Philippines that will participate in the annual International Tourismus Bourse (ITB), the world’s largest travel trade show. Scheduled on March 7-11, 2012 in Berlin, ITB includes booth exhibits of national and local tourist offices, travel-related companies and other service providers.
