The Philippines was hailed the “Honeymoon Destination of the Year” in the 2011 China Travel and Meetings Industry Awards, affirming the confidence of Chinese industry executives in the Philippines as a destination for Chinese tourists, according to the Philippine Embassy in Beijing.

The Philippines bested Bali and Thailand in a voting process that garnered 4.2 million votes by members of the industry during almost two months of voting period in July and August 2010. A panel of judges initially chose the destinations per category and asked members of the industry to vote online. General Luna, Siargao Island —- The town of General Luna where the world-class surf break Cloud 9 is located will be hosting this year’s Siargao Surfing Festival which will take place from September 17 to October 03. This year’s festival will have three major components, namely, the: 1) 13th Siargao National Surfing Cup – September 17 to 20; 2) Billabong Pro Junior Asia – September 21 to 28; and the 17th Siargao International Surfing Cup – September 29 to October 3.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) office in Tokyo and Mini Stop, a major convenience store chain in Japan, recently launched “Hello Summer Campaign 2011” aimed at promoting travel to the Philippines during the summer months in the said country.
The campaign includes promos called “Answer the Quiz and Win!” and “Eat Halo Halo and Tropical Sweets and Win!” which were run on 19 July and to end on 01 August 2011. A three-night-four-day trip to Cebu will be won by five lucky couples for the first promo while 300 halo-halo original roller bags and 100 Kyobashi Senbikiya fruit sets will be for the winners of the second contest. The Department of Tourism’s Special Bids and Awards Committee (SBAC) announced this morning the seven (7) top bidders who successfully met the strict criteria for the formulation of a Philippine country brand. A total of 26 companies heeded the government’s call for the submission of brand design bids to the DOT SBAC.

The eligible bidders will be given two months to prepare their campaigns for pitching to the DOT’s SBAC. After the selection of a final winning agency, that agency has two months to finalize its work and to deliver the final package composed of a branding manual, audiovisual presentation, and print and TV ad designs before end-November.
